 Chair Construction

13. Then the arms are cut to rough shape.
14. Finally, the arms are sculpted to final form before sanding.
15. The wood selected for the back braces is cut into strips .09 inches thick, book matched 4 strips to a brace, and glued up on this jig.
16. Similarly to the back braces, the rockers are cut into strips, however these strips are 1/8 inch thick, book matched 8 to a rocker and glued up in this jig.
17. Rockers after glue up.
18. All the chair components have now been cut to final rough form and we are ready for glue up.
19. After further shaping, the front and back legs are glued and screwed to the seat.
20. The seat and legs are then sculpted to rough form.
21. Now the headrest has been fitted and the back braces are in the process of being fitted. The back braces on this chair "float" meaning that they are not glued but are free to flex and rotate to conform to the unique curvature of each sitters back.
22. Adding stacks to rockers provides for additional height and a smooth transition from the rockers to the legs.
23. This is the first fitting of the chair to the rockers. The stacks will be marked while in this positon and then the transition rought cut. At this stage I can adjust the angle the chair will assume when sitting freely by adding additional strip to the front or back stacks.
24. The headrest has been glued up and the back braces "captured" and permitted to float.
